South Central College Agribusiness Instructor and Student selected for National Conference
(May 11, 2015) A South Central College (SCC) Agribusiness instructor and student have been selected to participate in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Rural (OECD) Conference in Memphis, TN on May 19 – 21. The event is hosted by the USDA Rural Development and White House Rural Council.
Instructor Megan Roberts and student Matt Schroepfer were notified on April 9 by the Office of the Under Secretary for USDA Rural Development that their nominations to participate in the conference had been accepted. Only 24 instructors and 24 students from across the country were selected to attend the conference. “Being able to network with national and international agricultural and economic development professionals is a fantastic opportunity,” said Roberts. “I hope to use the insight and connections I gain at this prestigious conference to bring value back at the local level. I am honored to attend on behalf of South Central College.”
Roberts has been an Agribusiness Instructor at South Central College since 2012. She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota, where she focused her studies on agricultural policy. She is currently pursuing a doctorate with an emphasis on agricultural education. She serves a variety of agricultural organizations, including as a Board Member at the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center (Farmamerica) and as an Advisory Council Member to the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School Agricultural Department. Roberts grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota and now lives on a hog and crop farm near Madelia with her husband, a full-time farmer.
Schroepfer is from Sleepy Eye, MN and is active in the Post-Secondary Agriculture Student Organization at SCC, where he is currently serving as a Vice President-Treasurer. In March, he competed at the National PAS Conference, where he was part of SCC’s 1st Place National Soils Team and received the 2nd Place Individual Soils Title. He also serves as President of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and an SCC Presidential Scholar. Recently, he was asked to serve on the Youth Board of Advisors for the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center (Farmamerica) and was selected to be on the Minnesota All-Academic Team this spring. In the past, he was involved in numerous high school organizations, including participating in both state and national FFA conventions. Matt plans to continue his education and pursue a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Ag Business after completing his two-year Agribusiness Production program at South Central College.
The OECD is an international network of countries from the United States, South America, and Europe dedicated to agriculture, development, economy, education, energy, environment, finance, government, health, innovation, technology, jobs, and collaboration. By attending the OECD Conference, Roberts and Schroepfer will acquire new insight on how colleges and universities can support economic development and growth in their respective local communities.
