Trip includes signing of Memorandum of Understanding

(November 18, 2014) - South Central College will host officials from the Basque Government Ministry of Education, Linguistic Policy and Culture from November 19 - 21. During the visit, Basque Government Deputy Minister for Vocational Education and Training Jorge Arevalo and South Central College President Dr. Annette Parker will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to explore educational exchange opportunities. 

“The signing of this document represents an exciting first step in our discussion about potential exchange options that may provide our students, faculty and staff with exposure to our global marketplace,” said Dr. Annette Parker, President of South Central College. 

While in Minnesota, the Basque delegation will also meet with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) officials to learn about the system’s Centers for Excellence, Charting the Future and industry partnerships. They will also tour and learn about the advanced manufacturing programs at three MnSCU colleges: Hennepin Technical, Saint Paul College and South Central College. They will also meet with leaders from South Central College and Minnesota State University, Mankato on the two institutions’ collective efforts in the area of advanced manufacturing. 

The Basque Country of Northern Spain has 2.1 million citizens, served by three universities, 120 centers of Higher Vocational Education and Training (HVET) and 9 centers for specialized higher education. The HVET system vocational schools offer diplomas with academic and professional value, as well as occupational certificates. The Basque vocational education system also benefits from the work of a dedicated innovation Center for Innovation and Vocational Education and Training (TKNIKA) that rolls out demand-led innovations through the HVET system in both public and private institutions. The Basque Country has developed a robust network of vocational education and training institutions to train workforce to fill manufacturing jobs.
