South Central College and Minnesota State Mankato Announce “Future Maverick” Program

(March 4, 2015) South Central College (SCC) and Minnesota State University, Mankato announced a partnership today that will result in guaranteed admission and a smooth transition for students transferring from SCC to Minnesota State Mankato who meet designated criteria.

South Central College President Dr. Annette Parker and Minnesota State Mankato President Dr. Richard Davenport today signed an agreement making the “Future Maverick” program at SCC official.

“We’re very pleased to be making this announcement today with South Central College,” said Davenport. “Minnesota State Mankato and SCC have a longstanding tradition of working together, and this ‘Future Maverick’ program exemplifies how Minnesota State Colleges and Universities institutions are collaborating to serve the students in our state.”

For the past year, a Minnesota State Mankato advisor has been available at SCC a few days a month to work with transfer students. The signing of today’s agreement will formalize and expand on these services. Under the Future Maverick agreement, students who complete their 2-year associate in arts (AA) degree at SCC’s North Mankato and Faribault campuses and meet academic requirements will be able to seamlessly transfer to Minnesota State Mankato to complete their bachelor’s degree.

“For many years, our liberal arts and sciences students have been able to earn their AA degree at SCC and transfer these credits to MSU to pursue their bachelor’s degree,” explained Dr. Parker. “What this agreement does is make this transition even easier for the student, with SCC and Minnesota State Mankato advisors working in coordination to help the student create a successful pathway from one institution to the next.”

The Future Maverick program will also enable some students to be admitted to both institutions simultaneously. With joint admissions, students may concurrently enroll in courses, as well as access advising, other services and student life activities at both institutions.

The two institutions will also coordinate their recruiting efforts in SCC’s geographic region, with joint Future Maverick outreach materials and presentations. Additionally Minnesota State Mankato will encourage applying students who have not met their admission requirements to start their college careers at SCC through the Future Maverick program.

Both South Central College and Minnesota State University are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which comprises 31 state institutions.
