South Central College Healthcare Students provide Flu Shots to the Community

(November 5, 2015) - South Central College’s Allied Health and Nursing programs all provide students with extensive hands-one experience in classroom and clinical environments. Each fall that experience benefits many individuals in the Greater Mankato community.

Through a partnership with Mayo Clinic Health System – Mankato this fall, students in South Central College’s Medical Assistant, Practical Nursing and Registered Nursing programs have volunteered at flu shot clinics.

SCC’s Medical Assistant students have given more than 10,000 flu shots to Mayo employees to date.  This year the Medical Assisting students will take part in seven employee flu shot clinics at the Mayo Clinic Health System hospital in Mankato.

SCC’s Nursing students have participated in flu shot clinics and roving clinics since 2007.

“Healthcare professionals are all about providing care and teaching. We are grateful to Mayo Clinic Health System for this opportunity to let our students engage with their community, gain experience in their fields, and be proud of their contributions,” said Michele Brielmaier, Dean of Allied Health and Nursing for South Central College.

“Our partnership with South Central College enables students to get hands-on experience in real-world settings,” says Stephen Campbell, M.D., Chief Quality Medical Officer at Mayo Clinic Health System in the Southwest Minnesota region. “It also helps us prepare the healthcare workforce of tomorrow in order to meet future demands.”
