Dr. Annette Parker’s Presidential Installation Address tonight provided an opportunity for the new leader to share her vision for South Central College. An installation is a traditional celebration typically held within a college president’s first year in office. Tonight’s event was attended by more than 340 friends, family and colleagues.
Dr. Parker said she is honored and privileged to serve as president of South Central College as it is today. She also spoke about college’s future opportunities that will lead to success. This vision includes:
- Spirit of Educational Cooperation:
South Central College faculty and staff will work with one another and other Minnesota State Colleges (MnSCU) system institutions to align program offerings and support services to student demands, as well as regional and state workforce needs.
- Innovative Approaches to Enhance Learner and Community Success:
South Central College will increase the success of all learners, including diverse and underserved populations, which is critical to the economic success of Minnesota. Specifically, South Central College is positioned to provide statewide leadership by increasing engagement with students’ families, implementing research-based best practices to increase student success, encouraging partnerships with community organizations, and strengthening global instructional competencies.
- Comprehensive Workforce Education Options:
South Central College will work with the MnSCU system, K-12 partners and industry to expand and enhance the value of the educational pathways available to learners and employers state-wide. These educational pathways will include an organized integration of modularized instruction, competency-based credits and degrees, credit for prior experience and learning, industry-recognized credentials and applied learning opportunities such as apprenticeships or on-the-job training. Because these elements build upon one another, learners have the flexibility to step into and out of an educational pathway and carry the credentials they earn along the way with them. This approach can benefit everyone from high school and college students to current workers and military veteran. Given South Central College’s activity in this arena at the national level, what starts in Minnesota could expand across the country.
- Online Program Optimization:
South Central College will build upon its outstanding history of offering quality online programs. In the future, the college will further expand its online program to provide increasingly individualized learning and advising.
- Presidential Advocacy:
Dr. Parker will continue to leverage the new role of today’s Community College Presidents, which now includes external development for the college at the local, state, national and even international level. This entails creating and nurturing partnerships with members of the public and private sectors.
- New Financial and Administrative Models:
South Central College will work with MnSCU in redesigning financial and administrative models that reward collaboration, drive efficiencies and strengthen each institution’s ability to provide access to extraordinary education for all Minnesotans.
“Collaboration is the theme common in all of these initiatives,” said Dr. Parker. “This intentionally aligns with ‘Charting the Future,’ the MnSCU Board of Trustees’ strategic plan, which calls for forging deeper collaborations among Minnesota’s 31 colleges and universities to maximize their collective strengths, resources and the talents of faculty and staff. Instead of working harder independently, we can work smarter together, collaborating to develop new revenue streams by supporting and encouraging administrative coordination, which in the end benefits our students and communities.”
