South Central College named Finalist for 16th Annual Tekne Awards
MHTA to honor Minnesota’s top technology organizations at the November 18 awards ceremony
(October 2, 2015) The Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) has named South Central College as a finalist in the Education Technology Award category for the 2015 Tekne Awards, which will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Thursday, November 18. Presented by the MHTA, the Tekne Awards annually recognize Minnesota’s best and brightest technology users and developers in innovation, development, education, commercialization and management.
South Central College was nominated for its “iMEC” distance learning model, which gives students access to the college’s mechatronics program anytime, anywhere. IMEC gives students the opportunity to access instructors and participate in distance classes, and at the same time experience the real hands-on training using online, simulation and remote access delivery methods. Through this approach, students can attain their Mechatronic Industrial Maintenance Certificate anywhere they have internet access and on a schedule of their convenience while receiving the same lab and troubleshooting experiences as their on-site classmates. South Central College’s iMEC initiative is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
“We first introduced Mechatronics in 2009 in response to industry demand for trained mechatronics technicians, which we knew would provide outstanding opportunities for our students,” said SCC mechatronics instructor Doug Laven. “It was this same motivation of meeting the needs of employers and students that led us to create iMEC. The process has been rewarding and this recognition by Tekne is further affirmation of our efforts.”
