South Central College’s Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Bresnan Arena in Taylor Center on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato. The ceremony includes graduates from South Central College’s Faribault and North Mankato campus completing their programs in Fall 2016 and Spring and Summer 2017. Noelle Hawton will congratulate the graduates on behalf of the Minnesota State system, of which South Central College is a part. Hawton is a 1988 graduate of South Central College and 1993 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato. She currently serves as the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for the Minnesota State system, which includes 37 colleges and universities throughout Minnesota
This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Tami Reuter, who was the Executive Director of South Central College’s North Mankato Campus Foundation from 2011 - 2017. During her tenure she significantly grew the Foundation, with her efforts tremendously benefiting the college and its students. In recognition of her many contributions, Reuter will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Education from South Central College.
Graduate Hamdi Abdi will be delivering the student remarks. She is from Owatonna and started at South Central College in 2015 as a Faribault Campus Presidential Scholarship recipient. While at SCC, she was the Vice President of Business Professionals of America, a member of the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success, a GEMS peer mentor to the students and President of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at SCC. She is graduating with her Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences degree.
South Central College’s 2017 Outstanding Alumni Award recipients, Marty Benes and Brian Stark, will also share their insights with the graduates:
Marty Benes is this year’s Faribault Campus Outstanding Alumnus. Benes graduated from South Central College (known as Faribault Technical College at the time) with an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in Accounting. Throughout his career he has served in various capacities for Wells Fargo and for the past 12 years has served as Vice President, Business Relationship Manager in the Metro MN Banking Group.
Brian Stark is this year’s North Mankato Campus Outstanding Alumnus. Stark graduated from South Central College in 1983 (then called Mankato Technical Institute) where he studied Commercial and Technical Art, which is now called Graphic Communications. Stark owns B.Stark & Co., a customized clothing company located in Mankato that provides screen printing, twill, embroidery and personalization services.
