South Central College was one of 34 recipients to receive a College Ready grant awarded by the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation in May 2013. Since then, over 50 learners have participated in grant-funded programming, and the college has seen great success, specifically with the College Ready Bridge to Success program.
The College Ready Bridge to Success program is designed to help incoming freshman and adult learners improve their developmental skills in reading, English, and math so that they can test out of developmental coursework. Taught in collaboration with Adult Basic Education, it includes a combination of individualized computer-based instruction, First Year Experience programming, and support from instructors and Student Affairs staff. Success has been evident after the first two sessions of the program:
- 83% percent of students who completed the program and retook the Accuplacer increased their test scores by 10 points in at least one area.
- Students tested out of a total of 24 College Readiness reading, English, or math courses for a total savings of approximately $24,000.
- 75% of bridge participants completed the First Year Experience coursework and were eligible to apply for a credit resulting in a total potential savings of $5,220.
The college is currently accepting applications for the College Ready Bridge to Success spring session, which will run from March 17 – May 8, 2014. There is no cost for students to apply or participate in the program which will run on both the North Mankato and Faribault campuses. Participants are required to attend Wednesday nights from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. and must complete an additional five hours of on-campus work during open lab times: Monday – Thursday, 4:30–9:00 p.m. Dinner is also provided at no cost.
