System helps Veterans learn what "Credits for Prior Military Learning" they can receive at South Central College
(November 10, 2015) - South Central College (SCC) is pleased to announce its participation in the Veterans Education Transfer System (VETS), a web-based tool that enables current and former service members to find programs that award academic credit for military learning experiences. VETS was established by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) in 2010. MnSCU works with colleges and universities in its system to “map” their coursework to military training, based on American Council on Education recommendations.
Through this process, SCC identified more than 100 of the college’s courses that align with thousands of military occupations. As a result, service members can now go to http://www.minnstate.edu/military, enter their military branch, occupation and rank or skill and see what courses will be accepted for automatic credit at SCC or other participating MnSCU colleges.
“We are proud to award our veterans the college credits they deserve for their military education,” said Dr. Annette Parker, president of South Central College. “Our academic team spent hours evaluating our coursework and were committed to providing the appropriate credits, with the goal of ensuring the long-term success of our veteran students. We take seriously our responsibility to serve the men and women of the armed forces who have served us.”
SCC has in the past offered credit for military credentials, which entailed college personnel auditing each military credential manually and making a judgement call on the courses with which it would align. The new system enables veterans to easily access consistent, accurate information themselves online and compare the programs and credits offered at multiple MnSCU colleges prior to application or admission. No other state offers a similar service through higher education.
According to Gina Sobania, Director of Military, Veteran and Adult Learner Services at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, “This is all about taking care of our veterans by ensuring they get the most out of their education during and after their military service. Earning college credit for previous military learning enables veterans to better utilize their educational benefits (such as the GI Bill) and allows them to complete college more quickly and at a lower cost to get into the workforce sooner or pursue additional higher education opportunities if they wish.”
SCC has been designated a “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” company since 2012 for the college’s commitment to serving veterans and military-family members. For more information on the VETS program and other Veteran services at SCC, visit www.southcentral.edu/Veterans/veterans-at-scc-overview.html.
