North Mankato Student Senate is organizing a community event on May 1, 2019 at 3:30pm to build mental health awareness and help end the stigma associated with mental health conditions.
- According to collegestats.org, "50% of students rated their mental health below average or poor," while also reporting that suicide is the third leading cause of death among college students.
- According to NAMI.org 2 million adults have co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders, while 60% of adults with mental health illness didn't receive mental health services in the past year.
Participants will walk around the North Mankato campus, giving participants the opportunity to sidewalk-chalk supportive messages to increase awareness, and support people with mental health concerns. The Student Senate is also partnering with SCC's Student Nursing Association to have tables with community mental health services at the end of the walk to share information about their services.
