Speech Team Successes

Posted on in Department Highlights

Brian Klosa, Communication Instructor & Speech Team Director at South Central College shared the following update with staff and faculty about the success of the speech team:

This past weekend the SCC speech team competed in two tournaments in one weekend. On Saturday we were at MSU to compete in the Larry Schnoor Invitational and then on Sunday we were at Gustavus to compete in the Bill Robertz Invitational. Both of these tournaments were well attended and in fact a total of eight out of the top 20 teams in the nation last year were in attendance. It was a bloodbath but we did quite well.

On Saturday at MSU, Hailey Woolverton finished in 4th place in Prose Interpretation. On Sunday at Gustavus Hailey finished in 4th place again in Prose and then she also finished in 3rd place in Drama Interpretation. I am very proud of Hailey and for my novices that competed and survived these seriously competitive tournaments and still want to compete again!

Welding is Back at SCC

Posted on in Department Highlights

Welding Student

Welding is a critical skill in demand. It remains and will continue to be a productive, cost-effective manufacturing method. Advanced technology is creating more uses for welding in the workplace and expanding employment opportunities. Businesses across south central Minnesota are in need of welders and are hiring.

The welding program at South Central College is designed to help students quickly develop technical knowledge and hands-on skills for a high-demand job. Students have the option to complete the 16-credit program or take any individual classes to upgrade their skills in various processes. Customized training is also available on either campus or onsite to meet businesses’ needs or schedules.

The 16-credit Certificate in Welding will prepare participants for the American Welding Society (AWS) certification. The program is designed to offer courses at times students can attend and still maintain employment. This semester, courses are conveniently offered in the evenings.

South Central College’s Center for Business & Industry can design welding courses to meet the particular needs of your company. They develop individualized courses based on specific objectives; the content and delivery varies from company to company. Whether your goal is to reduce downtime through welding maintenance, avoid rework, or reduce scrap and waste, the Center for Business & Industry can design the custom welding program that works for you.

SCC Black Squirrels: Taking Leadership Opportunities to a New Level

Posted on in Department Highlights

What has two beady eyes, a fuzzy black tail and is often seen climbing trees on campus? Here is a hint: SCC has survived without an official mascot – until recently!

The SCC Student Senates on the Faribault and North Mankato Campuses voted unanimously to name the black squirrel as the mascot of SCC. Seeking the input of students in the look of our mascot’s logo, a contest was held for its creation. Congratulations to Taylor Huber, a 2012 SCC Graphic Communications graduate for creating our new design.

Student Senate is only one of the more than 25 diverse student organizations to participate across both campuses. These organizations provide additional opportunities to SCC students for learning, involvement, leadership, community building, and creative expression.

When you were on campus, did you participate in a student organization? What advice would you have for current students in regards to getting involved?

SCC Speech Team Season is showing great promise

Posted on in Department Highlights

Hard to believe we are already approaching the middle of October. But with the turning leaves and cooler weather means the start of the speech team season. On Saturday October 5, the SCC Speech team took a short hop up to Gustavus to compete in the first ever "Great Minnesota State Together" tournament.

Our small team achieved 3rd place at the tournament (SCC doesn’t receive many team awards simply based on our size, so this was a huge surprise).

Posted on in Department Highlights

b2ap3_thumbnail_PharmTechLab.jpg

New and expanded lab spaces on campus, such as our Pharmacy Tech laboratory, provide the hands-on learning opportunities that students need to succeed in our expanded health care programs.  As a result of SCC’s expanded learning opportunities, our graduates will be better-prepared to be employed in the growing health care sector, and they will benefit by qualifying for higher-wage positions.  Please schedule a visit to campus to see the new lab spaces made possible by generous grant funding from the U.S. Department of Labor.
