Executive Summary
Each semester the Web Development class at South Central College is required to complete
a capstone project, working with a business. This project is designed to use all of
the material covered in the class in a practical manner. At the same time the student
gets hands-on practice in business communications, problem-solving, and citizenship.
This project gives small businesses and entreprenerial companies an excellent introduction
into web marketing and establishing a presence on the Web.

What the student provides:
- A proposed layout and color scheme for the site
- A 3-5 page web site including a home page, contact page, and support pages
- Up-to-date web development techniques including CSS, SEO (Search Engine Optimization),
written in well-commented, valid XHTML code.
This is a service-learning project which is done by the student at no charge although
the business partner is free to hire the student after the course in order to expand
and support the site.
It is understood that the student may use the site as a portfolio piece showing their
work to prospective employers.
What the business provides:
- All content and contact information
- Graphics and illustrations
- Feedback to the student as the web site is developed.
South Central College provides temporary web server space for each student. This allows
temporary web sites to be developed without affecting existing web sites that the business
may have. At the end of the course the student will give a copy of the web code to his
or her business partner.
If the business partner wants the site published they will have to have their own domain
and host provider. Here is an article
discussing how to purchase your own domain name and web hosting service. The student
should be able to assist you in this process.
