South Central College (SCC) has been offering Office Administration and Technology programs for more than 50 years. In that time, the field has evolved significantly, incorporating advanced technology, industry-specific skills and increased opportunities.
“Today’s Administrative Professional looks much different than in years past,” said Instructor Lynda Ernst. “Employers are looking for more out of this position and see the value of advanced education.”
To meet the needs of employers and administrative professionals, this fall the South Central College Office Administration and Technology department is adding several new options, including:
The courses are offered online, as well as at the Faribault and North Mankato campuses of South Central College. “We’ve had students who started on one of our campuses, then moved and continued with our online classes. It’s all about providing options that make sense for our learners and our employers,” said Instructor Jean Guerber. The department’s four instructors are in a unique position to judge the needs of the marketplace, with a combined total of 90 years of experience among them.
Because of their experience, SCC’s faculty are often called on to present at conferences throughout the state and have helped position the college as a leader in Office Administration and Technology education. Instructors Jean Guerber and Becky Miller serve as advisors for SCC’s award-winning Business Professionals of America student chapter. Lynda Ernst has authored a textbook used in legal courses across the country. Diane Wergeland was named the Minnesota Business Educators, Inc. Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2011.
And through their longevity, the Office Administration and Technology instructors are extremely adept when it comes to adopting the latest technology utilized by businesses today. They utilize Surface Pro Tablets and beginning in the fall will emphasis Microsoft Office 2013 and Windows 8.1 in all courses.
The payoff for graduates is increasing opportunity in high-growth field. According to the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, the number of Office Administration and Technology jobs in Minnesota is expected to increase 7% between 2013 and 2018.
