South Central College requires a computerized admission test to be completed and used for student rating in the Professional (RN) and Practical Nursing (PN) application process. The exams chosen are the HESI A2 Entrance Exam, two separate tests, each catered to the RN or PN student. It is an assessment tool used to evaluate prospective practical nursing students and their potential for successful program completion. The HESI A2 exam may be taken once during each admission period.

RN HESI A2 Entrance Exam: Starting with January 2015 application

  • Math Skills (55 questions)

Testing at South Central College: Entrance Exams are by appointment only.

  • Appointments should be made at least 48 hours prior to desired testing date.
  • Appointments for seat space are limited.
  • On the day of testing, photo identification (i.e. driver license, school ID, etc) and the receipt of payment for $35.00 testing fee are required. No exceptions.
  • The test is open for 5 hours including check-in time. Testing breaks will be scheduled; however, test-takers can leave when the exam is completed.
  • One retake exam may be given for test failures ONLY (based on space availability). The most recent score will be used for ranking purposes.
  • Scores may be used for one year following the date of examination.
  • Test must be completed by the following dates:
    • Last week in January and June.
  • Application Posting (Online): June 1 and January 1

*Passing the HESI Entrance Exam does not guarantee admission to either the RN or PN Program at SCC. It gives permission to the successful student to apply to the program of their choice.

Trouble Registering Online for HESI Entrance Exam 

Some students have reported error messages when attempting to register.  Please make sure you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox as your browser.  Registration is also hindered by use of mobile devices such as iPad, phones and tablets.  If you have trouble registering please call Heather Milton, 507 389-7231 for assitance.

Test Fees:

  • Basic Fee  and Retest Fee: $35.00 EACH
  • Test fees are paid for in the SCC Bookstore on the day of the exam. Please allow at least 30 minutes to pay for the test and get to the test on time.

The HESI Entrance Assessment Exam Review book third edition by HESI is available in both the Faribault and North Mankato bookstores. Please inquire at 507 389 7221 (NM) or 507 332 5812 (FB). Retest Policy Note
PN test score: A score of 70% or less in composite score would indicate a need to retest.
RN test score: A score of 85% or less in composite score would indicate a need to retest.

Students may retest only once and only for a failure.
Retest dates will be made at a later date.
