About Community Social Service

The Community Social Service program (CSS) is a social service model program designed to educate and teach students to work effectively as Direct Support Professionals / Paraprofessionals with individuals whom may have a variety of disabilities, behavioral disorders, communication disorders and medical issues such as:

  • developmental disabilities
  • physical disabilities
  • mental health issues
  • traumatic brain injuries
  • related conditions
  • medical complexities
  • substance addictions

These graduates may work with:

  • children & parents
  • adolescents
  • adults
  • senior citizens

In a variety of settings such as:

  • residential facilities
  • in-home services
  • vocational day training facilities
  • schools
  • short/long term care

This program is also a pre-social work program, educating students in a manner that can be applied to all types and settings in working with others that are listed above. The CSS program offers Social work courses which will transfer to other colleges in the MNSCU system.

Individuals interested in this type of program should consider themselves to be person-centered first and foremost. They should have the desire to lead, care for, and teach others to live, work, and participate in everyday life experiences in the most independent and least restrictive means possible.

While attending Southcentral College (SCC) and engaging in the CSS, students will be introduced to the professionalism of the health, human services and education occupations. They will develop a positive and professional Phil-Attitude (philosophy and attitude) toward people with differences, agency standards, industry procedures and practices, and society’s expectations.

The CSS teaches students to work effectively with people being served and members of their Network Support Teams.
The CSS offers a complete Certificate, Diploma and A.A.S. Degree in Community Social Service through comprehensive campus-based and online options.
