APPLYING TO THE NURSING PROGRAM AT SCC INVOLVES TWO APPLICATIONS
First Application:

Apply to SCC using the same application process as any student. Easy so far….
If you score below "college ready” on any component of the Accuplacer assessment, you will be required to take more classes than someone who scores college ready in these areas. SCC has courses designed to provide an opportunity to develop and improve basic skills and will be taken in preparation for the nursing program. Your advisor will guide you to take appropriate Courses.
Prior to applying for Technical Nursing, the following must be met:
- If your assessment scores indicate you are not college ready in one or more areas, you will be required to successfully complete assigned college readiness courses
- Successful completion of Basic Nursing 101 course or evidence of current CNA
- Successful completion of college-level Chemistry (You must meet the prerequisites to enroll in chemistry and general education classes)
- College GPA of 2.7 or higher
Second application - submitted directly to the nursing department:
Admission to technical nursing requires a separate application through the nursing department. This is a competitive process involving completion of nursing program prerequisites and submitting a completed nursing program application.
The application window for technical nursing is January 1 through February 15, annually, for start the following fall or spring semester.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Nursing information sessions will be offered at each campus throughout the year. Material covered at the session will include admission criteria, program expectations and graduation requirements. There will also be a question/answer period.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- You must provide evidence of an eligible health insurance plan that is in force and remains in force throughout your period of study (Student insurance is available for purchase through MnSCU. Applications are available in the Student Affairs Center).
- Current Health Care Provider CPR (includes one person, two person, infant, child, adult and obstructed airway)
- Drug Testing: Clinical facilities are committed to maintaining environments that are free of the influence of alcohol and drugs to protect the health, well-being, and safety of patients and employees. All students participating in clinical activities at certain facilities may be required to participate in drug testing.
- Minnesota law requires that any person who provides services that involve direct contact with patients and residents at a health care facility licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health have a background study conducted by the state. An individual who is disqualified from having direct patient contact as a result of the background study and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health will not be permitted to participate in a clinical placement in a Minnesota licensed health care facility. Failure to participate in a clinical placement required by the academic program could result in ineligibility to qualify for a degree in that program.
*Please Note: Once admitted to the technical nursing program most students progress at a full-time level. Students who enroll in general education coursework prior to their nursing program are doing so knowing that this may affect their ability to maintain full time status while in the nursing program. As a result, they may experience financial aid obstacles that can impact their financial aid eligibility and their full time-status, which may be needed for insurance purposes. Nursing applicants can also experience a break in studies between pre-nursing and clinical placement due to a high number of applicants. If you experience a break in studies, you will need to submit a re-entry form.
