Veterans Resource Center

The Veterans Resource Center at South Central College provides information and assistance to students making the transition from military to college. Veterans, current military members, and family members are encouraged to come in for personalized information about both on and off campus resources available to meet the unique challenges they face.

The Veterans Resource Center can provide information and referrals regarding:

  • Educational benefits and scholarships
  • Veterans' employment assistance and unemployment benefits
  • Medical benefits
  • Mental health resources
  • Family assistance services
  • Service-connected disability claims
  • Post-deployment transition issues
  • Veterans' rights regarding residency status, payment extensions, military transfer credits, and accommodations for deployments

The Veterans Resource Center is open for walk ins every Wednesday on the North Mankato campus, and by appointment other weekdays at both the North Mankato and Faribault campuses. The Veterans Resource Center can be reached at:

Minnesota GI Bill

The Minnesota G.I. Bill is a new program that provides post secondary educational assistance above and beyond other benefits to eligible Minnesota veterans. Full-time undergraduate or graduate students may be eligible receive up to $1,000 per semester and part-time students can receive up to $500 per semester.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you must be a Minnesota resident enrolled at a Minnesota institution and a:

  • Veteran who is serving or has served honorably in any branch of the United States armed forces at any time on or after September 11, 2001, or;
  • Non-veteran who has served honorably for a total of five years or more cumulatively as a member of the Minnesota National Guard or any other active or reserve component of the United States armed forces, and any part of that service occurred on or after September 11, 2001, or;
  • Surviving spouse or children of a person who has served in the military at any time on or after September 11, 2001, and who has died or has a total and permanent disability as a direct result of that military service.

Military Transfer Credits

You have earned college-level credit for your military training. To get military transfer credits, have an official copy of your military transcript sent to the admissions office for evaluation. Military transcripts can be obtained from:

Veterans Higher Education Rights

Both the State of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system have policies aimed at resolving the special circumstances that veterans may face as they pursue higher education. It is important to know what your rights are, in many cases it is necessary to identify yourself as a veteran in order for staff to know that these policies apply. Contact the Veterans Resource Center with any questions.

Minnesota Statute 197.775

  • Military Transfer Credit
    • Credit must be granted for military training based on American Council on Education equivalency standards.
  • In-State Tuition
    • Undergraduate: All veterans pay in-state tuition rates, regardless of residency status.
    • Graduate: Veterans who entered active duty as a Minnesota resident AND start attending college within two years of completing military service pay in-state tuition rates.
  • Delayed Payment of Tuition
    • "A state college or university may not assess late fees or other late charges for veterans who are eligible to receive federal educational assistance and who have applied for that assistance but not yet received it..."
    • Payment in full can be requested by the university within 30 days of receipt of federal educational assistance.

MnSCU Procedure 5.12.1

  • Students called to active duty and as a result are unable to complete a semester shall to the extent possible be provided one of the following options:
    • Full tuition refund (students would be liable for any financial aid refunds)
    • Extension allowing for a temporary grade of incomplete. Student can then complete the course upon discharge from active duty by independent study or by retaking  the course without charge.
    • Credit for course completion if, in the instructor's judgment, a sufficient amount of course work is completed.

*Note - your advisor should be notified of any prolonged absence. The three options listed above are at the discretion of the instructor, department, and university and should be worked out on an individual basis - this is not automatic!
