CRLA Certified Tutors
SCC's peer tutors are highly trained and certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). CRLA's tutor certification process sets an internationally accepted standard of skills and training for tutors, which prepares our tutors for success! To receive certification, our tutors undergo 10 hours of training, tutor for a minimum of 25 hours, and are evaluated by professional tutoring staff regularly. We believe in certification because we want our SCC students to receive the best tutoring service possible on the path to academic success.
NOTE: Students interested in becoming a tutor may contact one of our tutoring coordinators.
In addition to traditional tutoring within the ASC’s various centers, the department provides faculty with the opportunity to request Tutors Linked to Classes (TLC) and Tutors On-Demand.
Tutors Linked to Classes – Linked tutors work with faculty members throughout an entire semester to support students in a specific course section. The faculty must identify prospective linked tutors to assist in a class the following semester. The ASC provides training for the tutor and offers guidance to both the instructor and tutor on best practices for linked tutoring. The linked tutor attends each class session, models exemplary student behavior through preparation and note taking, assists the instructor with in-class activities, facilitates study sessions, and leads mini-lessons. In addition to responsibilities in the classroom, the tutor hosts two office hours or study sessions for students in the class.
Tutors On-Demand – For faculty who may not wish to have a full-time linked tutor in the classroom, an on-demand style allows them to utilize some of the benefits linked tutoring can offer. A Tutor On-Demand can be requested to assist instructors with in-class activities, lab work, study sessions, or peer review days.
Instructors who are interested in requesting either Tutors Linked to Classes or Tutors On-Demand, should complete the online Tutoring Services Request Form.
DISCLAIMER: No services can be guaranteed as they are dependent on the experience level, training, and availability of student tutors.
