In 2017, the Minnesota legislature designated $1 million in funding to establish the Minnesota Workforce Scholarship Pilot for students pursuing college programs in the high demand career areas of advanced manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare services and information technology.

This Thursday, February 15 from 12 - 1 p.m., South Central College officials and area legislators will award the first 16 of these $2,500 scholarships to new students planning to start in one of these program areas in fall 2018. In addition to the $40,000 in scholarships provided by the legislature, SCC’s campus foundations are awarding an additional $10,000 in scholarships, bringing the total to $50,000.

The scholarship presentation is part of South Central College’s 3rd Annual Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day at the college’s two campuses at 1225 Third St. SW in Faribault and 1920 Lee Blvd. in North Mankato. South Central College’s Signing Day event is part of National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day, which is held each year at colleges throughout the country to honor students who are entering a technical field. Just like NCAA collegiate athletics signings, participants will ink their intentions to start a technical program at South Central College in fall 2018. This year there will be 27 students participating in Signing Day on SCC’s Faribault campus and 76 on the North Mankato campus. Complete information on Signing Day is available at

“We are grateful to the legislature and our foundations for their significant investment in these future South Central College students. The scholarships will greatly benefit the students, as well as the employers that are fortunate enough to hire them once their education is complete,” said Dr. Annette Parker, president of South Central College.

Minnesota Workforce Development Scholarships will continue to be awarded at Minnesota State colleges throughout the state until March 30, 2018.

South Central College’s campus foundations award more than $400,000 in scholarships each year, with an application deadline of March 2, 2018 for most fall 2018 scholarships.
