Description This course provides an overview of cognitive and executive functioning experiences in home, school, or center-based settings. Students integrate knowledge of child development, learning environments, and teaching methods to promote curiosity, attention, perception, memory, problem solving, logical thinking, and executive functioning. (Prerequisite: ECE 1210)

Course Competencies

  1. Explore how different theories explain cognitive development.
  2. Explain how various cognitive skills (e.g., perception, attention, memory, problem-solving, social cognition) develop in children ages birth through age eight.
  3. Describe how working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control impact a child’s executive function and self-regulation.
  4. Describe the cognitive processes (executive function) that allow children to plan, organize, make decisions, pay attention, and regulate behavior.
  5. Demonstrate support of young children’s executive functioning development and ability to self-regulate in appropriate programs, environments, and learning experiences.
  6. Develop age-appropriate learning activities to support executive functioning and self-regulation in children ages birth through age eight.
  7. Explore assessment tools and intervention strategies related to atypical cognitive development, executive function, and self-regulation for children aged from birth through age eight.
  8. Identify issues related to cognitive development in young children.
  9. Explain the importance of considering the context of family, culture, and society in our understanding of children’s cognitive development for children ages birth through age eight.
