Course Title Introduction to Film
Description This course is designed to introduce and acclimate students to film as a significant artistic, rhetorical and cultural medium. Course content focuses on film as an element of popular culture, as well as film genres, cinematic techniques and cinematic conventions. (Prerequisites: Next-Generation Accuplacer Reading score 250+ OR Classic Accuplacer Reading score 77+ OR MCA Reading score 1046+ OR ACT Reading 21+ OR completion of one of the following courses with a grade of C, 2.0, or higher: READ 0099, ENGL 0099, or ENGL 100 [or equivalent].)   2. Explore the basic history of film from its beginnings until its current role as a major industry.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of different types of films.
  4. Explain narrative form, especially the differences between "story" and "plot."
  5. Define "mise-en-scene" and identify major elements of film design.
  6. Discuss the different elements of cinematography and demonstrate understanding of how they affect specific shots and scenes in films.
  7. Explain the major elements of "continuity editing."
  8. Examine the major elements of sound in film, including how sound interacts with the film image.
  9. Discuss film in American culture and the movie industry's role.
  10. Explain film in its cultural and historic context.
  11. Realize the use of film in personal expression.
  12. Apply what you have learned to critically evaluate a film.
