Description With the implementation of the electronic health record in today’s healthcare environment, it’s essential for students entering the healthcare field to understand this technology and how it relates to work in the industry. This course is designed as an introduction to the history of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and concepts behind the structure of electronic medical recording systems. Additionally, it will provide students the opportunity to use multiple functions of an educational electronic health record. (Prerequisites: None)

Course Competencies

  1. Recognize the aspects of health recording that led to the emergence of Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
  2. Differentiate between the purpose and benefits of electronic and paper recording systems.
  3. Identify multiple potential uses for electronic health recording systems.
  4. Define, compare, and contrast Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), and Personal Health Records (PHRs).
  5. Describe how paper records are converted to an electronic health record system and how Electronic Health Records are used in physician practices and other outpatient settings, as well as hospitals.
  6. Identify the ways in which electronic health information impacts the privacy and security of medical records and how the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) plays a role in the privacy and security of electronic health records.
  7. Use an educational electronic health record to experience multiple different functions that are facilitated by the software.
  8. Demonstrate the use of multiple functions in the educational EHR.
