Course Title Introduction to the Humanities
Description This course is an overview of the principal trends in Western thought and artistic expression from ancient times to the contemporary. Its aim is to foster an appreciation of how diverse ideas and works of art have contributed to our understanding of the universal human experience. Classroom instruction will be supplemented by guided tours of museums/exhibitions, and attendance at live performances of works pertinent to the course.

Prerequisite: CPT Writing score of at least 66 or else successful completion of Writing and English II (ENGL 0090)

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of other cultural heritages in the humanities
  3. Identify the links between historical events and human self-expression
  4. Analyze selected major works in the arts and humanities in terms of their contribution to the understanding of the human experience
  5. Become familiar with a basic knowledge of major artistic movements, value systems and the individuals who have shaped human culture
  6. Critically evaluate the aesthetic quality of literary works of art (Poetry, Prose, Essay, Drama)
  7. Critically evaluate the aesthetic quality of visual art forms (Sculpture, painting, architecture)
  8. Critically evaluate the aesthetic quality of performance art forms (Dance, Theater, Music, Film)
  9. Facilitate active learning by exposure to major works of the literary, visual, and performing arts
  10. Identify and understand your own ability to express personal identity in the arts
  11. Define and understand the term humanities and the school of thought it created.
  12. Identify and analyze the relationships that exist among the several areas of the humanities within the boundaries of popular culture.
