Institutional Core Competencies
- Critical and Creative Thinking - Students will be able to demonstrate purposeful thinking with the goal of using a creative process for developing and building upon ideas and/or the goal of using a critical process for the analyzing and evaluating of ideas.
Course Competencies
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role or contribution of a cultural heritage to the humanities.
- Identify the links between historical events and human self-expression in a particular culture.
- Analyze a culture's major works in the arts and humanities in terms of their contribution to the understanding of the human experience.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of a culture's major artistic movements, value systems, and the individuals who have shaped human culture such as Aristotle's elements of drama, the Renaissance, and its focus on the individual and movement.
- Critically evaluate the aesthetic quality of literary works of art (Poetry, Prose, Essay, Drama etc.).
- Critically evaluate the aesthetic quality of visual art forms (sculpture, painting, architecture etc.).
- Critically evaluate the aesthetic quality of a culture's performance art forms (Dance, Theater, Music, etc.).
- Participate in active learning by exposure to major works of the literary, visual, and performing arts in a particular culture.
- Understand your own ability to express personal identity in the arts.
- Write about the humanities/fine arts.
- Formulate personal reactions to the fine arts of a specific culture/country.
- Identify human values within the fine arts.
