| Description | Students apply theory related to alteration in body systems through observation, assessment, and interaction with clients in laboratory and acute care settings. Nursing interventions are individualized to meet each client's needs with consideration of the client's culture. The Nursing Process is implemented with an emphasis on critical thinking. Organizational skills are developed with opportunities to care for multiple clients. Students will demonstrate effective communication with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team. Professional nursing behavior will be demonstrated.This course will also cover the characteristics of hazardous wastes and its safe handling, storage, and disposal. (Prerequisites: Successfully complete all Semester 1 Courses in order to advance to Semester 2 Courses) |

Course Competencies
- Relate the concepts of acute and chronic illness in providing culturally competent care.
- Use evidence based practice when prioritizing nursing interventions.
- Determine normal and abnormal findings during assessments of acute care patients.
- Use therapeutic verbal and nonverbal techniques to identify and individualize patient problems.
- Demonstrate safety in medication administration using technologies for accuracy and efficiency.
- Demonstrate safe provision of treatment when using the nursing process.
- Demonstrate personal integrity, professional behaviors and professional boundaries within the scope of nursing practice and code of ethics
- Summarize the role of the student nurse and other team members to identify each member's contributions for optimal patient outcomes.
- Document assessments and interventions in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Determine individualized patient teaching that promote positive health outcomes.
- Describe standards of practice in the acute care setting as it relates to efficiency and use of resources.
- Recognize tasks that can be delegated within the nursing care team.
