| Description | This course builds on concepts previously learned in Professional Nursing Concepts 1 and reinforces pathophysiological processes of the cardiovascular system, the eyes and ears, the neurologic system, pre- and postoperative care, and mental health. These concepts will be applied to develop critical thinking and evidence-based practice using the nursing process. The nursing process, clinical reasoning, and use of research-based nursing actions are integrated throughout the course as foundation for assisting the adult medical surgical population experiencing disruptions in the health-illness continuum. Pharmacological concepts, drug classifications, and client centered considerations when administering medications will be integrated throughout the course (Prerequisites: Successfully complete NURS 2205 and NURS 2300) (Corequisite: BIOL 270 successfully completed before final ASN semester). |

Pre/Corequisites

Course Competencies

- Analyze principles of diversity and cultural sensitivity for quality client care during acute and chronic physical and psychosocial conditions of the adult client.
- Identify therapeutic communication techniques that promote effective client nurse communication in various clinical settings.
- Integrate principles of teaching/learning in providing information to the medical surgical and/or mental health groups to promote and maintain optimal health.
- Examine medical surgical and mental health theory and the nursing process to alterations in body systems.
- Correlate medication and pharmacology practices to acute and chronic physical and psychosocial conditions of the adult client.
- Utilize critical thinking strategies for medical surgical and mental health clients in many settings that promote high-level wellness.
- Differentiate the professional nurse role within the interdisciplinary team in caring for medical surgical and mental health clients.
- Discuss legal and ethical implications of prescribed treatment and therapies for medical surgical and mental health clients.
- Identify nursing interventions based on evidence-based practice for medical surgical and mental health clients.
- Analyze evidence-based practice strategies that promote safe, quality care for clients, their families, and communities.
- Discover digital and other technology resources to improve client care acute and chronic physical and psychosocial conditions.
