Description Lifespan Development is an introductory course examining human development from conception to end of life, with emphasis on typical physical, cognitive and psychosocial development although attention will be paid to several developmental challenges and psychopathologies that may occur throughout the lifespan. Human lifespan stages to be covered: genetics and prenatal development, infancy, early-middle-late childhood, adolescence, early-middle-late adulthood, and end of life. (Prerequisites: Next-Generation Accuplacer Reading score 250+ OR Classic Accuplacer Reading score 77+ OR MCA Reading score 1046+ OR ACT Reading 21+ OR completion of one of the following courses with a grade of C, 2.0, or higher: READ 0099, ENGL 0099, or ENGL 100 [or equivalent].) (This course fulfills Goal Area 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences & Goal Area 7a & b: Human Diversity and Race, Power, and Justice).

  2. Differentiate the main theories and issues of human lifespan development including learning, cognitive, contextual, and sociological theories.

  4. Evaluate the quality of developmental psychology information from multiple sources.
  5. Examine lifespan developmental processes (biological, neurological, cognitive, cultural, and socio-emotional) related to all age periods beginning with genetics and prenatal development to end of life.
  6. Analyze how different lifespan developmental processes (biological, neurological, cognitive, cultural, and socio-emotional) related to all age periods from genetics and prenatal development to end of life interact with each other in a developmental context.
  7. Describe the developmental challenges and psychopathologies that may occur throughout the lifespan.
  8. Illustrate how developmental psychological principles apply to daily life.
  9. Analyze ethical perspectives related to legal, social, and scientific issues with human development.
  10. Develop teamwork skills.
  11. Present information to others effectively and accurately.
  12. Convey thoughts and opinions in writing.
