Course Title Principle Practice of Respiratory Care II
Description This course examines respiratory equipment and the principles of airway management, introduces both non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, and covers arterial blood gas sampling. Students will practice respiratory procedures in the lab to demonstrate competence and prepare for direct patient care in critical care environments (2 hrs lec/1 hr lab). (Prerequisites: RESP 1100, RESP 1120)

Course Competencies

  1. Apply the principles of airway management to maintain airway patency in various patient populations.
  2. Explain the physiological basis and clinical application of non-invasive ventilation techniques.
  3. Demonstrate the proper use of invasive mechanical ventilation equipment in critical care environments.
  4. Interpret arterial blood gas (ABG) results to assess a patient's respiratory and metabolic status.
  5. Apply infection control practices in the use of respiratory equipment and during procedures.
  6. Explain the mechanisms and clinical significance of respiratory gases, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other specialty gases.
  7. Recommend appropriate modifications to the respiratory care plan based on analysis of patient data and clinical findings.
  8. Demonstrate competence in suctioning and other airway clearance techniques to remove secretions and ensure airway patency.
  9. Develop communication skills for educating patients and families on respiratory therapy equipment and interventions.
