Course Title Somali Language 1
Description This course provides an introduction to Somali language and culture. Communication skills include: speaking, listening, reading & writing. Sensitivity to cultural differences is emphasized. Simple texts dealing with cultural topics are used to develop skill in speaking. The four skills - speaking, comprehending, reading, and writing - are developed simultaneously. This course is designed for students with very little or no previous experience with the Somali language. (Prerequisite: None) (MnTC Goal 8 Global Perspectives)

  4. Demonstrate working knowledge of spoken Somali.
  5. Write short dialogues or paragraphs in Somali language.
  6. Converse with a native Somali language speaker.
  7. Read and consider short passages within cultural context.
  8. Develop familiarity with aspects of Somali culture.
  9. Use number systems in Somali language.
  10. Apply basic Somali grammar in conversational sentences.
  11. Identify the definition of vocabulary words in context.
  12. Model awareness of and/or interest in Somali culture.
