Course Title Introduction to Social Work
Description This course provides students with an introduction to the profession of social work using a generalist model to practice in a diverse society. Students will learn about the history of the profession, values and ethics, roles and tasks, and theories required for social work practice along with various fields of practice. Students will experience group work learning to develop critical thinking skills and professional communication. (Prerequisites: Next-Generation Accuplacer Reading score 250+ OR Classic Accuplacer Reading score 77+ OR MCA Reading score 1046+ OR ACT Reading 21+ OR completion of one of the following courses with a grade of C, 2.0, or higher: READ 0099, ENGL 0099, or ENGL 100 [or equivalent].)

  1. Discuss the historical evolution of the social work profession.
  2. Explain generalist social work as a profession.
  3. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the social work profession within the social welfare system.
  4. Discuss social work’s perspective on human diversity, oppression, and privilege.
  5. Identify comfort level to work with persons different from yourself.
  6. Discuss the values of the profession and recognize the National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics as the practice framework for generalist social work practice.
  7. Differentiate among professional social workers’ responsibility and other service providers’ responsibilities.
  8. Identify socioeconomic and related issues impacting populations at risk, including issues of social justice and systems of oppression.
  9. Identify major fields of practice in the social work profession.
  10. Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance; and oral, written, and electronic communication.
  11. Identify selected social problems, social welfare agencies’ responses to these issues, and the role that social workers play in these various settings.
