| Description | This course will discuss the history of social welfare as an institution. Various social problems will be examined and discussed in terms of at-risk populations, societal norms and values, and how policy is developed to address these problems. Students will complete a research paper in APA format on a selected social issue and services to address this issue. (Prerequisite: ENGL 100) (MnTC Goal Areas: 5, 7a) |

Course Competencies

- Critique the history of the current welfare system in the United States.
- Identify how societal reactions to diversity impact dependency and access to services.
- Explain the underlying role of poverty in social problems and service delivery to those who are dependent.
- Examine the social issue of homelessness and current services that address homelessness.
- Explain the current social service delivery system that addresses child welfare in the United States.
- Examine how society views and addresses the social issue of crime for children and adults in the United States.
- Identify issues in the current social service delivery system addressing healthcare.
- Characterize past through present treatment and services for people with disabilities.
- Examine aging as a social welfare issue.
- Construct a scholarly research paper regarding a selected social welfare issue and service delivery system that addresses the social welfare issue using multiple, reliable, credible, and scholarly sources.
- Demonstrate writing a scholarly research paper in American Psychological Association (APA) format.
- Analyze a social welfare issue and the service delivery system that exists to address this issue.
