Course Title Surgical Lab
Description This course focuses on applied principles of surgical asepsis in the operating room. It provides an introduction to the physical organization of the surgical suite. Students learn to prepare and maintain the sterile field including identification, care, and handling of instruments; suture; preparation and use of supplies; and equipment. Emphasis is on basic skills of the surgical technologist in preparation for and during the operative procedure. (Prerequisite: SURG 1100, Corequisites: SURG 1240)

  2. Describe and demonstrate hand hygiene and the surgical scrub.

  6. Define sterile processing of surgical instrumentation.
  7. Establish and maintain the sterile field.
  8. Explain the importance of surgical counts.
  9. Explain instrumentation.
  10. Describe postoperative duties.
  11. Explain sterile gowning and gloving.
  12. Explain perioperative duties.
  13. Perform various perioperative duties.
  14. Describe and perform various intraoperative duties.
  15. Practice wound management.
  16. Display the assistant circulator role.
