Allied Dental Clinical Sedation Certification
Allied Dental Clinical Sedation certification is a Minnesota Board of Dentistry-approved course. It is designed for the dental hygienist and dental assistant in preparation to care for the client receiving dental clinical sedation.
Developed by expert nurses with decades of teaching experience, Allied Dental Clinical Sedation is one of the only intravenous sedation certification trainings approved by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.
This one-of-a-kind training course includes an online introductory unit (6 hours) paired with a single weekend of hands-on training (14 hours) to provide dental hygienists and dental assistants with the skills necessary to initiate, maintain, monitor, and remove intravenous (IV) lines, and to aid in the administration of medications into an existing IV line under the supervision of a dentist with sedation or general anesthesia certification.
The hands-on part of this training is held in person at the South Central College North Mankato campus.

Prerequisites
- Must be a licensed Dental Hygienist or Dental Assistant
- Must have current Health Care Provider CPR certification
- Must be nitrous oxide certified

Instructors
Candence Mortenson-Klimpel, RN, MSN, CNE, CCRN
Candence “Candy” Mortenson-Klimpel’s wide range of clinical experience enhances her classroom and clinical teaching. She worked for many years in intensive care and medical-surgical settings in a variety of roles and has been a full-time educator for over 10 years. She was instrumental in implementing a PICC program while working in specialized intravenous therapy. Candy has maintained certification as a critical care nurse for over 25 years and is a certified nurse educator. After receiving her diploma RN, she completed a BSN and MSN from Minnesota State University. Her experience in the clinical setting adds depth to the program.
Annette Benson, RN, MS, CNE, CHSE
Annette Benson is a Certified Nurse Educator and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator who has instructed health care training programs at South Central College for over 10 years. Her wide range of education and experience includes 11 years as nursing faculty and health simulation coordinator at South Central College, 8 years as an assistant professor of nursing at MSU-Mankato, working as an urgent care nurse for Allina Health, volunteer work as a disaster nurse and blood donor ambassador for the American Red Cross, and participation in several nursing associations, networks, and advisory boards.
Julia Gunderson, RN, BSN
Julia Gunderson brings a wide range of nursing and teaching experience to our program. She began her nursing career in obstetrics in 2011 and then moved to the emergency department in 2018, where she continues to work as a Registered Nurse. Julia is an experienced instructor, having served as an adjunct clinical nurse faculty member at South Central College since 2014 and as an adjunct dental sedation instructor since 2021. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Course Agenda
Online Unit
6 hours in D2L. Access is provided approximately 2 weeks before Day 1.
- Complete all three review units and their corresponding quizzes.
- Each unit takes approximately 2 hours to complete, for a total of 6 hours.
- Unit 1 — Moderate sedation guidelines and pharmacology review and quiz
- Unit 2 — ABC (airway, breathing, and circulation) and monitor introduction
- Unit 3 — Anatomy and physiology
Day 1: 6-Hour Didactic Lecture
Friday, 4:00–10:00 p.m., SCC North Mankato
Day 2: 8-Hour Clinical
Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., SCC North Mankato
- Anesthesia emergencies and management
- Discharge teaching and charting
- Application, interpretation, and troubleshooting of cardiac monitors
- Hands-on management of airway obstruction and apnea: oral and nasopharyngeal airways, AED, and emergency dental case studies
- Emergency and dental sedation medication assembly; anatomy and physiology related to venipuncture sites
- Practice time: demonstrate successful venipuncture (6 total — 4 simulated, 2 human). Note: you will perform human IV insertions on each other during class.

Course Preparation
Before the in-person class, review the duties that may be asked or delegated to you under the supervision of the dentist or oral surgeon. Please review the information in Minnesota Statutes section 150A.10 and Minnesota Rules 3100.8700 from the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.
