Students at SCC originate from numerous countries, and most of these multilingual and multicultural students are U.S. citizens or permanent residents: living, working, and studying here. International students are NOT immigrant students. Deemed nonimmigrants by the Department of Homeland Security, they come to the U.S. specifically to study.

SCC also serves refugee and asylee students. A refugee is a person “who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her country of nationality because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion”; an asylee is a "person who meets the definition of refugee and is already present in the United States.” We also serve students who request DACA. Understanding differences and avoiding assumptions is important!
