South Central College commonly utilizes Microsoft 365 services. Chromebooks are not recommended for use as primary devices for coursework at South Central College. IT Services has put together the minimum and recommended computer specifications to consider. We curated this list based on a variety of system requirements.
Some programs have specific technology requirements. We strongly recommend that you contact an instructor in your program area to ask about the required software and ensure you have access to a computer that meets all software system requirements. Instructor contact information can be found in the SCC Employee Directory or in D2L. Depending on the device, the availability of applications and their functions varies for Microsoft 365 products (such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and other applications used in your courses.
Windows Systems
- Minimum:
- Storage: 128GB SSD
- Memory (RAM): 8 GB
- Processor: Intel with Windows 11 (List of Windows 11 supported Intel processors) or AMD with Windows 11 (List of Windows 11 supported AMD processors)
- Built-in camera, speakers, and microphone (or externally connected devices)
- Recommended:
- Storage: 128 GB SSD
- Memory (RAM): 16 GB DDR4
- Processor: Intel i5 (8th Gen or newer), or AMD for Windows 11

- WiFi: 5 or 6, 5Ghz capable
MacOS Systems
Only select models of Mac computers will run the requirements listed below.
- Required Operating System: Sonoma (14) or newer. If you already have an Apple computer here are instructions for identifying which macOS it is currently running.

- Intel Core i5, Apple M1 or newer

- Respondus Lockdown Browser – Download the attachment, and scroll to pages 13-15.
- D2L – Browsers (Updated within the newest two releases): Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari. Internet Explorer is NOT supported.
- Mobile apps for Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, etc.) – Scroll down to Mobile apps
- Adobe Creative Cloud
