Guest speaker: Dr. Joseph Mbele


About thespeaker: Dr. Joseph Mbele is a professor of English at Saint Olaf Collegein Northfield, Minnesota. As a consultant on the differences between Africanand American culture, he offers cultural orientation to Americans going toAfrica and orientation to Africans in America, including students, immigrants,and visitors.  He presents workshops inEast Africa on topics such as Culture and Globalization.  The author of five books and numerous articles, his popular book,"Africans and Americans: Embracing Cultural Differences," is used bystudents on Africa study abroad programs and other Americans visiting Africa orwith ties to people or groups in Africa. He also does literature translations--inMatengo, Swahili, and English. His research is mostly in Folklore, especiallyepic and folktale traditions of the world, and traditions about heroes,tricksters and outlaws as is exemplified by his book, "MatengoFolktales". His gentle manner and his sense of humor will enthrallyou.

Starting April 14, the GlobalEducation Committee of South Central College will present a series of one-hourtalks via Zoom, open to all SCC faculty, administrators, staff, students, andfriends. Each guest speaker will tell us their stories, so that we can learnabout the world and think about how we can do things differently here at home.Please join us!
